Design
Our planning tasks are usually related to the company’s business activities. We prepare the necessary documentation as a first step in the execution of an assignment:
Conceptual and licensing plans
Approval plans, and then the
Approval and approval drawings, approval drawings and approval drawings
For manufacturing orders, we usually provide a “B” level plan, for which we prepare the shop floor drawings. Our retrofit work requires a significant construction effort, which is framed by a systematic development programme.
In addition, we also carry out a number of design-only contracts.
Our design and development activities are also governed by the requirements of a quality system certified by TÜV in accordance with EN ISO 9001:2000. We undertake the preparation of study designs; we prepare the complete electrical design documentation for the realisation of a plant, using state-of-the-art design software, and, if required, we also carry out the licensing by the authorities and/or the electricity supply company.
Our company uses the design software WSCAD, EPLAN, OMEGACAD and AUTOCAD. Under a licence agreement, we use the so-called PROPLAN design software for the design of EATON (Moeller) installations.
Our areas of activity:
- 120 kV power plant, power supply or consumer equipment
- Medium voltage switchgear and networks, transformer stations
0,4 kV switchgear and distribution equipment, power supply to industrial and municipal installations - Power station and substation auxiliary installations
- Design of intelligent switchgear with the necessary automation and supervision
- Installation of control systems for electricity distribution networks
The design documentation provided:
- Expert opinion, study plan
Permitting plans (connection plan, pipeline rights plans) - Execution plans: conceptual connection and power routing plans, protection plans,
- Production drawings: construction and workshop drawings
- For on-site installation: installation, layout and tracing drawings, installation plans, terminal and connection plans
Since our company was founded, the software team has been working alongside the design team. They are responsible for the configuration, programming and commissioning of control and automation systems, as well as the installation and programming of other intelligent devices (protection). They have extensive experience and considerable references, in particular in the design and programming of Moeller, Beckoff and other PLCs and SMART Windows displays.
In terms of services for proprietary SCADA systems, special mention should be made of the reliable automation functions that greatly facilitate the operation of complex, highly integrated power systems.

Production
Our manufacturing activities focus on switchgear produced under various cooperation contracts.
Medium voltage equipment is assembled under an agreement with ABB. Under this agreement, we have been authorised to assemble ZS1, ZS8 and UNIMIX air-insulated equipment.
For low-voltage equipment, we have been working with Eaton (Moeller) for decades. Today we are one of the few Eaton partner companies that manufactures MODAN and xEnergy type distributors under licence.
The distribution and switchgear equipment covered by the cooperation agreements is manufactured under strict technical control by the manufacturers, using materials of the same quality. In addition to the manufacturers and types mentioned, we are of course prepared to consider equipment and equipment from other manufacturers if our customers so request.
DC equipment type EK 110
The EK 110 type DC equipment for local and interurban public transport is a field-type, typified, indoor, fixed, free-standing, low-voltage switchgear and controlgear (TTA) of field construction, which complies with the requirements of standard MSZ EN 60439-1:2000. The equipment shall have an air-insulated, partially compartmented main busbar with a rated current of 5000 A and a 3100 A auxiliary busbar.
The EK 110 type DC switchgear is designed to meet the needs of modern urban and suburban electrified public transport and the transport companies that operate it.
The electrical and structural unit of the equipment is the bay, and is therefore described in the descriptions of the individual bays. From an electrical point of view, the primary design of the field variants is described, and only the most important references are made to the secondary technology.
The basic design of the EK 110 field is the traction branch with a trolley circuit breaker and auxiliary busbar disconnector and the so-called line test auxiliary circuit. The same design is represented by the auxiliary busbar feeder field, which transmits the traction energy to the auxiliary busbar instead of to the connecting cable line. A further element of the field supply is the in-feed, which receives the energy in-feed from the current transformer(s) via a disconnector.
Retrofit
Many large companies (for cost-saving, operational or other practical reasons) have found it necessary to modernise their electrical installations by refurbishing existing equipment and replacing obsolete components and equipment, rather than installing new equipment. In order to meet these customer needs, VÁV UNION Ltd. undertakes the refurbishment of medium voltage encapsulated equipment of almost any old manufacturer (e.g. VÁV equipment, VERTESZ 10VEK400, SRTO, STO, or BOTO etc.). The main part of the primary overhaul is the installation of a new circuit breaker, which is carried out by installing the vacuum or SF6 (ABB: VD4, VM1, or HD4 type) circuit breaker preferred by the customer, and by overhauling or rebuilding the circuit breaker trolley structure in the workshop. The overhaul can cover all the primary equipment, including the installation of new instrument transformers, earthing switches, surge arresters, etc.
The renovation of the secondary parts, the protection and control design according to the customer’s needs, can be determined taking into account the most modern solutions. In order to shorten the changeover time, we replace the complete low-voltage (relay) enclosure or even the assembled mounting panel of the existing enclosure as a complete unit, prefabricated in the workshop.
A further important area of retrofit is the upgrading of built-in cell installations, which we have carried out on a number of industrial and power utility installations.
Manufacture of old railway equipment
VÁV UNION Ltd. acquired the manufacturing rights to all the equipment produced by the State-owned company for decades when it acquired the Electric Station Installation Company (hereinafter ‘VÁV’) in 1994. With these rights, our company is able to repair and refurbish VÁV medium voltage equipment, such as NT 10, NT12, NT20, NBK10, NBK20, NKB or aBNT6, in any part of the country, in the production plant or on site.
The refurbishment will follow the principles and methods outlined for retrofit. In the event of a need to upgrade existing equipment, we are able to supply our customers with cells of the same size and construction as the existing ones, but with modern primary and secondary equipment, on favourable terms.

Execution
Besides the production of equipment, electrical construction was the most important profile of the Electrical Installation Company. This provided VÁV UNION Ltd. with the expertise, competence and a wealth of experience that later became one of the keys to the company’s success.
The credo of VÁV UNION Ltd. is to be a partner in the realisation of tailor-made quality solutions, thinking together with the operator and adapting to the customer’s operating conditions and expectations.
We have extensive experience in the field of reconstruction and retrofit works, and as a result, more and more operators (even during the design phase) are asking our experts for their opinion on upgrading, expanding or installing a new system or equipment. Our proposals aim to provide complete information, from the possible technical solutions to the proposed timetable for implementation.
For us, construction is not just a task to be carried out according to a plan, but a conscious process of activity; it is also a company’s business.
The person responsible for managing the works is the Chief Facilities Engineer, who is responsible for ensuring that the work is carried out to the required quality and on time, for providing the necessary material and human resources and for liaising with the client.
The concrete works are carried out by our installation teams under the direction of the site manager, who is also the company’s representative on site during the works. We have five well-trained installation teams of 6-8 people each. These teams are structured to carry out all the tasks involved in the construction work, and each team is made up of electricians, fitters, cable fitters and locksmiths. If, during the construction work, it is necessary to carry out work that does not fall within the main profile of our company or if we do not have sufficient human resources to complete the work on time, we use qualified subcontractors.

Maintenance, service
It is very important for every company to be able to satisfy the needs of its customers and clients across the widest possible spectrum, i.e. to offer services to the client in addition to a specific project. In the case of VÁV UNION Ltd., this means that after the delivery and commissioning of the switchgear, the company also provides service and maintenance support as required.
In recent years, there has been a general tendency for companies to streamline their corporate profile and to reduce the number of maintenance departments or to subcontract their maintenance tasks.
Since its establishment, VÁV UNION Ltd. has been consciously developing its service and maintenance activities, which has resulted in an outstanding team of specialists and equipment.
In addition to the traditional maintenance work, our company also carries out troubleshooting work according to the customer’s needs. In practice, this means that, in the event of a breakdown of the equipment we supply, a suitably qualified technician, familiar with the equipment and the site, equipped with spare parts, will arrive on site as soon as possible and immediately start to rectify the problem.
Technological advances have made it possible to retrieve the event log of the faulty station and the current switching image from VÁV UNION Kft. This allows our technicians to arrive on site with the necessary information.
In addition to satisfying customer needs, this work is also important for us because we can use the operator experience gained in this way directly in our development and production activities.
